In April 2000, six individuals - John Ward, Sue Ward, Martin Foster, John Barry, Marie State and Mike Shally - decided to form a new running club. Just a month later, we had no less than 14 completed membership applications, and almost every month since then, our membership has continued to rise. We now have more than 130 members.
The original six wrote a constitution and began the process with the MCAA (Midland Counties Athletics Association) to become an affiliated club. Our first official committee meeting was held on 25th January 2001 with our newly approved name, Bournville Harriers (BVH). In March that year, we held an EGM which saw John Barry elected as the Club's first Chairperson.
We organised our first race on 30th December 2001 and this has now become 'The Yacht Handicap', a well known event in our annual race calendar. Our second annual event was launched in September 2002 - our 10K race. Always heavily supported by Club members, without whom it could not go ahead, this race has seen entries rise every year.
With so many enthusiastic members, we're able to enter teams in events across the country, including road relay races and both men's and women's cross country meets.
We always encourage our members to enter races and many have represented the Club in the USA, Australia, Ireland and Portugal. Large groups of BVH members can often be found either running in, or supporting, events around the country.
Whilst BVH takes its running seriously, the Club also works hard to maintain a lively social side. We also organise skittles evenings, quizzes, discos a Christmas party and awards evening.
We're always looking for more members to get involved in the Club, so if you've any ideas for social events, or suggestions about the Club in general, please speak to a member of the Committee.
